Footnotes:

1. Formal party designations did not exist until after the 1792 election.
2. Popular vote totals were not retained until the 1824 election.
3. Before the 12th amendment (1804), the Vice-President was the second-place finisher.
4. In this election, the President and Vice-President victors were political enemies, leading to the eventual passage of the 12th amendment that required separate ballots for the two offices.
5. Starting in 1804, parties chose the Vice-Presidential candidate according to a "balancing" formula -- choose someone whose views would appeal to a different set of voters. This formula failed in 1828, when John Calhoun was chosen to balance Andrew Jackson. Their differences led to Calhoun's resignation in 1830.
6. Each of the four candidates had strong followings. Jackson received more votes than the next two, Adams and Crawford, combined -- but no one received a clear majority in the Electoral vote. By the 12th Amendment, the House of Representatives had to choose among the top three. Clay, who ran fourth, threw his support to Adams who eventually won. Adams then rewarded Clay by appointing him Secretary of State, a choice Cabinet plum.
7. The Whig party ran four regional candidates, hoping that no candidate would get a majority in the Electoral College, thus throwing the election into the House. The Whigs thought that they could prevail there. The strategy backfired as the Whig vote was badly split.
8. Rival factions in the Democratic party nominated separate candidates. The Southern faction nominated John Breckenridge, whilst the Northern faction chose Stephen Douglas. The resulting split vote allowed the Republican, Abraham Lincoln, to win.
9. The notorious "stolen" election of 1876. Tilden received a majority of the popular vote *and* a majority of the electoral college vote. But the Republican party contested the results in Mississippi. They stacked a "commission" with cronies, who decided in favor of Hayes. The resultant 25 vote swing won the election for Hayes.
10. Theodore Roosevelt broke from Taft and the establishment Republicans, forming the Progressive party. The split allowed the Democrat, Woodrow Wilson to be elected.
11. One elector felt that the Democrats should have reversed the ticket.
12. Minority president, Gore received more popular votes than did Bush, but Bush had the Electoral college majority. Some vote anomolies in Florida, with its 25 electoral votes, were never fully cleared up, leaving the result in question. Interesting numerical coincidence with the number of Mississippi electoral votes in 1876.
13. Missouri's 11 electoral votes undecided as of November 10, 2008. UPDATE: eventually, McCain won the state by 4,000 votes. As the result did not affect the election outcome, no recount was ordered.
14. As of November 8, 2020, Arizona (11), Georgia (16), North Carolina (15) and Alaska (3) vote count incomplete due to large percentage of mail-in ballots.
